SAFETY TIPS TO HELP PREVEnt SHARK ATTACKS

  • Wear darker swim, surf or dive wear. Sharks are known to be more attracted to lighter colors. Avoid shiny jewelry.
  • Water activities should be conducted near higher concentrations of people. Sharks prefer lone prey.
  • Avoid fishing areas. Sharks have to eat and go where the bait is.
  • No water activities at dawn, dusk and nighttime.
  • Try and be where lifeguards are present. From their higher vantage point, lifeguards have a better chance of spotting sharks.
  • Avoid erratic behavior in the water such as splashing and screaming. Sharks are attracted to certain sounds.
  • If you spot fish jumping out of the water, get out of the water or move far away from the area. Sharks could be chasing the fish.
  • Avoid the water if you are bleeding or have any open wounds. Sharks have a keen sense of smell.
  • Avoid shallow murky water. Sharks attack in water as shallow as two feet.
